“The archaeological record is curated with an eye to a given agenda. Like a display in a museum, pieces of information are arranged and selected like artefacts in order help a particular vision seem to be the natural result of critical research. As it was once explained to me by a local researcher: ‘mystery provides an engine for creativity.’”
– Gareth Spicer, Evidence & Story: Archaeology in Edmonton

Stories from all eras of Edmonton’s history converge in the archaeological sites peppering the landscape. Such narratives are no more examined than in Rossdale and the area surrounding the Walterdale Bridge Replaement Project.

Join the Edmonton City as Museum Project for the next edition of the Retrofutures speaker series as we discuss Edmonton at the crossroads. As was the case a century ago, the Rossdale area is once again a hub of activity, speculation, and development surrounded by rapidly growing city. Archeaologist Gareth Spicer will discuss the archaeological research emerging out of the Walterdale Project and its role in reshaping the story of Edmonton as we have come to know it.

There will be opportunities to see artefacts for the excavation, as questions about the project, and add your thoughts to the role archaeology plays in shaping Edmonton’s future.

Light refreshments will be served.
